Emily's Birth Story
Well I had mild contractions on Sat night (2/23/02) 10 min. apart.
These never really went away, but were definitely not strong. On Mon. evening
I decided to try some spicy food for dinner, and took a 20 min. walk
on my treadmill, then took a nice hot shower. Shortly after all this
I started having contractions every 4-6 min. Still not super strong, but strong
enough to make me want to breathe with them a little.
I timed them for 2-1/2 hours & finally woke up Dave & we called our
midwife, Jackie. We decided to have me take a bath and see what happened - they
didn't go away so at about 2 pm we called her again and decided to head
to the hospital. We got there around 2:30 pm. At that time I was 4 cm
and 70% effaced.
By 6 am I was 6 cm and 85% and had stronger contractions every 4 min. I
sat in the nice jacuzzi tub there :) I highly recommend this,
especially in early labor as its relaxing. By 8 am I was 8 cm and 90%
effaced & my midwife, Loree, was guessing that the baby would be here by noon
... but my body had other plans. According to my midwife you should go
from 8 to 10 cm in about 15 min. or so. Well I labored and labored and
labored and by 7:45 PM (yes PM) I was still at 8 cm and contracting
pretty hard - the contractions wouldn't get down to 2-3 min. apart to
work effectively. We tried all sorts of natural methods (squatting,
pumping, etc.) but couldn't get them close enough. So we finally
decided to try pitocin. By this time I was so exhausted from laboring &
lack of sleep I wasn't sure I could handle it so we through in some
Nubain - this took the edge off a bit (though I couldn't tell much) but
it did help me sleep between which I think helped in the pushing stage.
At 9 pm I couldn't not push with the contractions so she checked me and
(believe it or not) there was still a tiny lip of cervix! But we pushed
anyway and it opened right up. She said I was a good pusher :) I have
no idea how many times I pushed but it was about a hours time & little
Emily came into the world! :) She had the cord around her neck once but
not anything serious. Dave cut the cord and my placenta delivered within 5 min.
She breastfed about an hour and a half after birth.
She was 6 lb. 15 oz and 19" long & had great coloring (nice and pink)
even at birth - but not very much hair!. She was a little angel and so
precious!
