Ellen’s Baby Shower

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

I made this cake for my friend Ellen from an online mommy group I belong to (mom’s in WI).  We threw a surprise baby shower for her and I of course volunteered for cake ;-)   Here’s what I came up with!  The baby girl sandals on top are made of gumpaste and painted with a pearl luster dust.  Flowers are made of gumpaste and the cake is iced in buttercream …the “clothes” are fondant cut outs.

Mini roses cake

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I had an extra hunk of cake leftover from my calculator cake (below) so I decided to decorate it for fun.  This cake is only about 4.5″x4.5″ and about 2″ tall.  Fondant covered and ribbon around the base.  These are some gumpaste roses I made previously.

Kelsey’s Cake

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

This cake was made for my little sister for her 17th birthday.  She found the design/graphic below (below cake pics) on the internet and I based the design off this image.  The flowers on top are gumpaste.  Everything else is fondant except the real ribbon around the base of each tier.

Based on this design:

His and Hers :)

Friday, March 7th, 2008

These cakes were made for my sister and her husband for their birthdays.  He’s not a chocolate fan (and the rest of us are!) so I made him a special yellow cake.

First the “hers” design…I based the design on some fabric I saw on a purse.  The choclate icing is buttercream and the strip is fondant.  It didn’t work out perfect but in the end most of the “flaws” are hidden. :)   The design on top is two fold…first it is a replica of the scrolls on the side and secondly it is an S which start’s my sister’s name (Shelly).

And for the “his” cake… her hubby works in construction/home improvement/remodeling.  So he got a “wood” cake with a gumpaste circular saw blade cutting in. :)   The saw blade is painted with a silver shimmer that doesn’t show as much in the photo.  The cake is a 4″ round, fondant covered and painted to get that wood look.

Island Princess Cake

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Here she is … Emily’s Island Princess cake for her party with family tomorrow.  I had to fight with Barbie a little to cooperate and almost took a friend’s suggestion to take her legs off LOL  But a little knife work later {to the carboard base, not barbie ;-) } and she got in there far enough.  Icing is all buttercream and the dress is covered in a shimmer pearl dust.  The flowers on the cake corners are Frangipani (a tropical flower – she IS the island princess you know ;-) ) and it was my first time doing them.  I was suprised at how easy they were.  Those are made of gumpaste.  The barbie cake was made in a pampered chef 8c measure bowl (glass) and the base is a one layer 10″ square.

This smaller cake is a 4″ one made with some extra cake batter I had.  Thought it would make a fun “personal” cake for Emily.  Again has the Barbie’s dress pattern on it and the shimmer dust.

Castle Cupcakes

Monday, February 25th, 2008

These castle cupcakes I made for my daughter to take to school for her bday.  I had found this idea online along with another idea (princess crowns).  I let her pick thinking that won’t take too long.  Ok…well lesson learned ;-)   I spent a good 4 hrs on the castles alone.  Fortunately the baking and icing/glitter part was super quick. :)   But she loves them (other than thinking that the castles were going to be really big cause of the pic I had shown her).  They are dusted in a pearl dust so they shimmer.  I had to make 24 of them to take.  Whew…I’m tired of that now :)   But they did turn out cute.   I wish the pic could show the details and shimmer better…I need to make that light box!

Crown

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

This is my first royal icing crown – well I should take it back – my second as the first one I did shattered on me during “dusting” :S  But This one came off with only one minor breakage and I’m just letting it sit another couple days before handling it anymore!  Let it get good and hard.  This is for on a cupcake cake I’ll be making for Sat for my daughter’s birthday party with her friends.  So hopefully it can survive until then! :)

The crown is made with pink royal icing and has 3 layers of design on top of each other for stability.  Then once dried I painted it with a pearl luster dust to give it a shimmer.

Playing with roses some more ~ trying to find the right way to do it!

Hello Kitty!

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Another cake creation made by my sister and myself.  I did all the base fondant, embossing, base borders and made the kitty head from gumpaste.  She decided where she wanted dots and hearts and also traced the hearts.  Nothing like teamwork ;-)   A super girly cake for her 2 little girls’ birthday party.

Jungle animals

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

A sneak peek at this weekends cake…jungle time! Pretty happy with how they turned out…this is 3 days worth of work. Darn giraffe took me three tries to get one I liked! The alligator will be swimming in water (to explain his lack of body :) )

New horses

For a cake I’m doing tomorrow…

More butterflies

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

More butterflies – these will be for Cassie’s bday cake this week :) Pink/purple/blue…made the dark chocolate darker this time and got it colder before adding the color so it didn’t smudge the dark outlines like last time.

Horse

Monday, July 16th, 2007

This was my first try to make a horse out of fondant. Its for Cassie’s bday cake in a few weeks. Inspired by a pic of another molded horse I found online. Loved the cuteness of it. So here’s my horsey…

First Bouquet

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

I’ve been playing with making more gumpaste flowers. Have a LONG way to go :D But here’s my first bouquet I put together. Just some random flowers. I’ve since changed the way the rose turns out but need to put a whole rose together…so a pic of that will come in a few days ;-) This is a close up pic of it but it looks better/more full in person. All of the flowers blossoms are 100% edible! (wire stems are not ;-)

And more flowers :)

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Here is another rose I made ~ this time I rolled out the petals thinner. Only problem this time was that the fondant was getting dry (it was a month old by now) so it dried out quicker and broke easier on the edges :( Oh well – but this rose turned out better than my first one. And this time I did a calyx and 3 petals around it…

and this is just some more playing with calla lilies. I made this with thinner fondant/gumpaste mixture and used a smaller cutter. I then thinned the edges more too. to give it that “ruffled” look a bit. Not sure I’m sold on the leaves – I like the concept but I need to work on getting them to appear more smooth/natural.

More flowers!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

So here is the completed lily arrangement I did with leaves… The color is a touch darker than this (brighter here due to the flash):

And also my first attempt to make a hibiscus out of royal icing:

New royal icing flowers from course 2…

Fondant flowers!

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Just started Wilton’s course 3 last week and made my first rose. Not perfect (should have rolled it out thinner I think) and it got a little smushed on the way home :P but here it is!

Also a few pics of my newest creation ~ the calla lily…
