Pink swags

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I had this cake dummy (styrofoam) covered in fondant from the last class I taught.  Decided to try something new…not sure how I like it but it is what it is :D   The swags are dusted with pearl dust but doesn’t show up a ton in the pic.

Nick’s Topsy Turvy Grad Cake

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Today we celebrated the college graduation of my cousin (in law :D   ) Nick.  His wife (my cousin) wanted a funky cake and requested a topsy turvy cake based on the invite colors/pattern they used for the party.  This was my first topsy turvy and lots of lessons learned.  I want to send a big thank you to a fellow cake-buddy, Jeanne from Well Dressed Cakes for the great instructions she gave me to help me pull it off.

The cake itself is 4″, 6″, 8″ but each layer is carved to taper in at the bottom.  Each layer is also 3 layers high (standard cake is 2 layers).  They are fondant covered, with fondant accents and wires with fondant balls on the top.  The words around the middle tier were taken from the invite and say “inspire”, “dream”, and “believe”.  This was another S&S inspired creation – kudos to my sista for helping me come up with the designs for it and she helped with the actual decor as well and gave me moral support when the original top tier was falling apart in my hands :D (I later redid that entire tier)

More lilies

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Here are some flowers I was playing around with.  I received these tiger lily cutters for my birthday and I then purchased a lily veiner (to make the authentic lines/viens in the petals).  So this was my first lily with it.  My pistol is a bit large but I’ll work on that ;-)   I made teh stamens too as I didn’t have any premade.  It is dusted with a darker pink that doesn’t show up that great especially in the pic…I just had pink gumpaste on hand so I used that.  The calla lilies were made after a friend asked about them and got me inspired to try them again :)   So here they are.  Still not sure I’m sold on the stems but not sure what to do for them.

Lisa’s Wedding Cake

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Here is my first wedding cake ~ made for my cousin, Lisa.  Her wedding color was red and her bouquets had lilies, dahlias, zinnias and similar flowers.  The flower cut outs on the cake are lilies.  Its hard to see the detail – I cropped one out below and you can see some of the detail that was on the flower (actual stamens show and such).  The cakes sizes are 6″/8″/10″/12″/14″.  Fed about 170 and weighed a ton :)   We put it together on site but then the catering people ended up having to move the table TWICE with this cake on it that was basically just stacked (you don’t generally do a center support dowel when you assemble on site as its supposed to stay put ;-)   But it survived a move across the outside patio then another move into the building, up an elevator and into the inside banquet hall when the determined it was going to rain (and RAIN it did!)

This is an 11×15 sheet cake with fondant flowers around it, palm trees made with fondant on 1/2″ dowels and the figures are fondant/gumpaste.  Cake is iced with buttercream icing.
