I am happy to announce that the Cakes by Steph blog has been moved to its own domain!  The new location of all of my cake creations will be:

A Sweet Cake

I will also be adding tutorials, how-to’s, recipes and more in the near future.  I’d love to hear your feedback on what you’d like to see!  Check it out and let me know how you like the new design.  I’m still tweaking things to make it more user friendly and adding info but all of the old cake blog posts are there – plus some new ones! 🙂

Hope to see you there!

Two tier 8″ and 10″ basket weave cake with flowers. All buttercream…

January 20th, 2011

This is January’s work cake.  Another mug inspiration.  The cake itself didn’t photograph well.  The painting on it is a gold pearly finish.  So it looks neater in person than the photo can show.  Below the cake photo is a pic of the mug that inspired it.  The top of the cake is painted all over but because of the lighting it looks washed out.  Really its just as dark as it shows on the front of the top tier.

This fancy cake was made for my niece turning 6…and she loves Fancy Nancy and all things fancy herself.  This is a 6″ round cake with buttercream icing.  Fondant bow and “ribbon”.  The crown & glasses are gumpaste and the necklace is made of sugar pearls.

October 27th, 2010

This cake was made for my sweet little niece turning 1.  The main cake is a 6″ – 8″ tiered cake with buttercream icing and fondant accents.  The smash cake is a 1 layer 6″ cake with all buttercream.  Monkey face is gumpaste.

This cake was for a little girl who love Cinderella.  The cake is a 6″ ball, fondant covered with gumpaste accents. Along with this cake, went 30 chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese icing and blue sprinkles.

October 21st, 2010

This cake was for my husband’s office for their Oct birthday celebration.   The bottom cake is a 10″ round with buttercream.  On top of that is a chocolate  bowl that has cake inside of it.  The hand is made from rice krispie treats and covered in green chocolate.  Everything is edible except of course for the candy wrappers 🙂

This was a bridal shower cake done in buttercream.  Cakes are 10″ & 12″.  The color was a pool blue color with dark brown scrolling and a monogram on front.  Included below is the pic of the dress I color matched off of.

September 17th, 2010

This bridal shower cake was based off of another cake of mine (green and pink).  This time I did it in a merlot and gold color scheme to match the wedding colors.  All fondant.

September 2nd, 2010

This cake was for September at my husband’s work.  It was based off another cake I had seen online.  All fondant with gumpaste flowers.  I used my airbrush to give it a gradient.    Cake sizes are 4″, 6″ & 8″.

These cupcakes went along with the little boy with the lego cake…these were for a party with friends.  Cupcakes had buttercream icing and gumpaste light sabers.

This lego cake was made for a little guy turning 6.  They wanted a #6 from legos and also (to quote him)  “a structure” 🙂  So this is the result – all the blocks were put on individually and made of fondant.

This lego cake was for twin girls turning 8.  All made from fondant, including the logo.

Here are some more cupcakes I did for my husband’s work.  This month I made three new kinds.  The first was a lemon cupcake with lemon icing and a gumpaste daisy.  The second was a vanilla cupcake with peanut butter filling, chocolate icing and half of a pb cup stuck in the top.  And finally the last was a chocolate cupcake with a marshmallow filling and ganache on top with a design to replicate some other cupcake out there 😉

This cake was done for twin boys who love Spiderman & Friends.  The main cake is a tiered 6″ square on a 8″ round.  The square cake made the clubhouse and is fondant covered.  The bottom layer has 3 characters (Spiderman, Iron Man and The Hulk) made out of royal icing.  The 2 individual cakes are 4″ cakes – one for each boy 🙂

And this year I got to make one for the daughter of a friend who graduated high school this spring.  Their request was turquoise and zebra – and “can it be sparkly”?  So I got myself an airbrush, played around and ended up spraying the bottom tier a pearly color.  Its not as easy to tell in the pic but boy in the sun it sparkled!

Back in June of 2007 I was asked to make a bridal shower cake for my wonderful cousin, Aly.  This cake pic has had a home at the top of the blog since day 1 and I get SO many comments on that cake.  Well now 3 yrs later we are celebrating the soon to be born baby to this wonderful couple! 🙂  So of course I was excited to do the baby shower cake!  I went off of the party ware they had purchased ~ see a pic below to compare 🙂  Cake is all buttercream except the birds and nest, which are gumpaste.

June 28th, 2010

For June birthday’s at my husband’s work I created a variety of flavored cupcakes.  On the menu were:

* Vanilla Cupcakes with Vanilla Frosting and Chocolate-Marshmallow Filling
* Lime Cupcakes with Coconut frosting and toasted coconut
* Chocolate Cupcakes dipped in Chocolate Ganache and topped with Mint Frosting and a chocolate leaf

I had the honor of making my mom’s wedding cake in early June.  She requested the floating tiers and said she was using pink but otherwise let me do as I wished.  So I ended up getting myself some new cutters to learn peonies and added in the hydrangeas and roses I already knew.  The rest of the cake is buttercream.  The hydrangea blossoms on the side are gumpaste like the top flowers.  These tiers were 8″, 10″ and 12″.

A friend loved the cake at the top of the blog (brown/green one with the calla lilies) but wanted it in colors to match their party ware.  So this is what we did 🙂

These cupcakes were for my daughter for her school birthday.  She wanted chocolate frosting and flowers on them like she’d seen me do in the past.

Here is the March cake for hubby’s work ~ a little gift for them 🙂

My daughter is at it again – designing her own cupcakes to take to school today.  She picked it all out… and even helped me do them.

February 20th, 2010

My daughter turns 8 next Friday – hard to believe another year has come and gone.  It seems like I was just posting her birthday cake when she turned 7!  This year she wanted a Barbie girl theme.  I guess more “big girl” barbie?  Anyway, we had family over one day and her friends over the next day so…of course 2 cakes. 🙂  Here’s what she designed…she she designed them.  Right down to every detail…every dot color, every shape placement and the request of the 8 on top.  She even dipped into my colored pencil stash to help me sketch it.  It was so fun to see her bring her ideas to life on paper for me to create.  A budding cake designer!
